Second Grade Math

10 common core math terms for second graders

TermDefinition
Number Sense Refers to a group of key math abilities. It includes the ability to understand quantities and concepts like more and less.
Associative Property of Addition When three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the grouping of the addends.
Expression An expression is a sentence with a minimum of two numbers and at least one math operation. This math operation can be addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Estimate Approximate calculation or round the number to the nearest place value.
Geometry Branch of mathematics that studies the sizes, shapes, positions angles and dimensions of things.
Measurement Unit A standard quantity used to express a physical quantity.
Measurement Process of finding a number that shows the amount of something.
Subtraction Property of Equality Refers to balancing an equation by using the same mathematical operation on both sides.
Place Value The value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in the number.
Fact Family A group of math facts or equations created using the same set of numbers. The fact family shows the relationships between the three numbers involved.
