What is Democracy? | A Government that gets its power from the people, not kings or military dictators. |

What is a Constitution? | Document that describes the laws and organization of a nation. It may also include the history and customs. |
Why do societies write down their rules? | To establish a shared standard on how people should behave and guidelines for what to do if they didn't. |
What is meant by "civic participation"? | Citizens had to be active in their government. |
What is “rule of law”? | Everyone had to follow the law. The idea that no one is above or an exception to the law |
What are examples of civic participation? | serve in the army, the government, or vote. |
In ancient Athens, was the act of paying taxes considered “civic participation”? | No. Everyone had to pay taxes, even non-Citizens! |

In ancient Athens, what is an “assembly”? | The gathering of all the citizens, usually to vote on laws |

What were the three main political institutions in Athens? | The Assembly, The Council of 500, The People’s Court |
What were the requirements to be a Citizen in ancient Athens? | Male, 18 or older, parents were Athenian citizens This means, girls and children were not considered citizens! |
What was the “Council of 500”? | Smaller legislative body whose purpose is to make decisions that would later be voted on by the entire assembly. |
Originally, all the people in ancient Athens had to gather and vote on things 3 times a month! This became difficult for all citizens to participate. What did the Athenian citizens decide to do instead of this monthly assembly? | They created a smaller legislative body called the Council of 500. |
What were the requirements to be allowed to serve in the Council of 500? | Male, At least 30 years old, Had to be a Citizen |
How long were council members allowed to serve in the government? | 1 year each time, and can be a council member only 2 times. |
Council members were chosen from all the Athenian territories. How did they determine how many members of each territory can serve in the Council? | By their population. The more people, the more representatives they get in the council. |
