Term | Definition |

Transitive Verbs | need a direct object because they so not make sense on their own.(say, but, offer, give, show, lend, eat) Only action verbs can be transitive or intransitive We are left asking a question... Ex: The shoppers bought. WHAT DID THEY BUY? |
Intransitive Verbs | subject and verb make sense on their own...they do not need an object or a subject complement. Can be followed by a prepositional phrase. |
Subject Complement | refers back to the subject and is often interchangeable with the subject. Often follows linking verbs... (If you flip the sentence around, will it mean the same thing?) |
Action Verbs | show what the subject is physically doing or what the subject is mentally feeling or doing... Can be either transitive or intransitive...can have indirect or direct objects |
Linking Verbs | express a state of being when no action is taking place, but we still need a verb to complete a sentence. Ex: am, are , is, was, were, be, been, being, seem, appear, become |
Direct Object | Receives the direct action of the verb; it will almost always follow an action verb. Answers the questions WHO or WHAT |
Indirect Object | Receives the action of the direct object...Answers the question WHOM |
Gerund | a noun disguised as a verb. Often ends in -ing. Ex: Shopping is Skarleth's favorite hobby. |
