What is pharmacology? The study of drugs and their origin, nature, properties, and effects on living organisms.
How are drugs classified? subcategory or subcategories called classification
What are the three drug classifications? By chemical compostion, how they work, and the disease they treat.
What is the generic name of a medication? It reflects the chemical name, but in a shorter form.
What is the brand name of a medication? The name a manufacturer uses to market the drug.
What are the indications? The reason for administering a medication or performing a treatment.
What are contra-indications? A factor that prevents the use of a medication or treatment.
What is the dose? The amount of a drug to be administered at one time.
What is the mechanism of action? How a drug works
What are effects? the desired results of administration of a medication.
What are side effects? Effects that are not desired and that occur in addition to the desired effects.
what three qualities do drugs must have in order to be a medicine? effectiveness, safety, and side effects.
what two ways can you get medication? by prescription and over the counter
sublingual? under the tounge
oral? the drug is swallowed and absorbed through the stomach and intestinal tract.
inhalation? a gas or aerosol inhaled by the patient
injection? the drug is injected into a muscle mass
rectal? a suppository
analgesics? relieves pain
antihistamines? help allergies
antibiotics? kill bacteria
antacids? relieve heartburn
Tablets? compressed powder shaped into a disk
liquid for injections? ex: epinephrine
Spray? nitroglycerin
liquid/ vaporized albuterol by small-volume nebulizer
gel? substance that the patient swallows
suspension? drug particles mixed
fine powder for inhilation? albuterol by hand-held metered-does inhaler
