Medical Names? Generic and Brand Name
What is a generic name? Reflects the chemical name, but in shorter form
What is a brand name? The name the manufacturer uses to market the drug
What is classification? a broad subcatagory or catagories
Indication? The reasons for giving a medication or performing treatment
Contra-indiction? A factor that prevents the use of a medication or treatment
Dose? the amount of a drug given at one time
Mechanism of actoin? how the drug works
Effects? desired results of a given medication
Side effects? effects we do not want to happen
What are the qualities for a drug to be a medicine? Effectiveness, Safety, and Side-effects
what does an analgesic do? relieves pain
what does an antihistamine do? helps allergies
what does an atibiotic do? kills bacteria
what does an antacid do? releives heartburn
What is a sublingual route of administratoin? under the tongue

INH=What? Inhalation
What is a G-tube hooked up to? stomach
What is a suspension drug? mixed particles
How is a spray given? sublingual
What are the 6 drug forms? Capsule, Elixer, Drop, Suppository, Suspension, and Tablet
What are the 5 routes you can give someone medicine? IV, IM, Oral, Rectal, and Subcutaneous
What are the 6 rights? right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right patient, and right document

How do you classify a drug? by their chemical composition, by how they work, by the disease they treat
