TermDefinition
copyright a form of protection given to creators of original work, such as books, poems, websites, artwork, pictures, or music. Copyright prevents other people from stealing that work and passing it as their own.
fair use a part of copyright law that allows you to use someone else’s work without their permission, based on what you are using it for (such as educational purposes).
creative commons Work that is allowed to be used and shared without the creator’s permission.
plagiarism taking someone else’s words, ideas, or creations, and passing it off as your own, without giving credit to the original creator.
ethical acting in a moral way; doing the right thing over the wrong thing.
citation a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, author, or creator. Providing citations helps you avoid plagiarism.
digital citizen A person who has the skills and knowledge to use the internet and other technology effectively and responsibly.
cyberbullying harassment or bullying that takes place through electronic communication, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.
digital footprint a person’s set of online activities and actions; a person’s reputation online.
