Consumer person who buys goods or services for their own use.
Goods something you BUY that you can touch or see. ex a phone
Service something you BUY that is done for you. ex a carwash
Best before the date until which food retains its specific properties e.g. taste, aroma, appearance
Sell by the date up until which a store may safely sell food items.
Use by the date up until which a food may be used safely
Product labeling required information about a product
Country of origin product information on where it came from.
Unit pricing a way of comparing best value for similar products that come in different sizes/quantities.

False economy a purchase that initially seems to be good value but in the long-term turns out to be more expensive

The consumer law that regulates the claims a seller can make about their good or service. Consumer Protection Act 2007
Merchantable quality Under SGSS, a product needs to be of good enough quality for the price paid.
Fit for the purpose intended Under SGSS, a product must do what you expect it to do. Ex. A kettle should boil water.
Be as described Under SGSS, a product must match the description, packaging or advert. Ex. Waterproof jacket should stop water from getting in.
Conform to sample shown. Under SGSS, items bought from display must the same as the sample.         Ex. Carpet colour not same as display
Necessary skills Under SGSS, services must be provided by a suitably qualified person.
Proper care and attention. Under SGSS, the person providing a service must focus on their work.
Quality materials Under SGSS, the service provider must use suitable quality materials.
Redress A consumer's right when a product or service is faulty. Can take the form or the '3 R's'
Misleading Claims Under CPA, Businesses can't make false statements about goods, services or prices.
Unfair practices Under CPA, Businesses can't use aggressive or prohibited actions.
Small Claims Court a fast and affordable way to settle consumer complaints. No solicitors needed and quick results.
