Terms used in the Popular Music topic - Stage 4

melody a single line of pitched notes that is the main part of a piece or song
harmony pitched notes often made up of chords that support the melody
rhythm the role that supplies the beat and tempo
lead guitar 6 string guitar that has a harmony or melody role and usually plays one note at time
bass guitar 4 string guitar that has a harmony/rhythm role but plays one note at a time
rhythm guitar 6 string guitar that has a harmony/rhythm role and usually plays chords
keyboard often used as a harmony role, playing chords
drums unpitched instrument that can ONLY play a rhythm role
verse same music, different lyrics
chorus same music, same lyrics
bridge different music, different lyrics
intro a section at the beginning of a song, not always present
outro a section at the end of the song, not always present, featuring something already played
instrumental a section featuring an instrument solo and no lyrics
prechorus a section before the chorus, not always present
structure the order of sections in a piece of music
acapella singing with no instrumental accompaniment
falsetto when a male sings higher than his normal vocal range
backbeat an emphasis on beats 2 and 4, usually by drums and only in popular music
chords more than one note played at a time eg. strumming a guitar
