bar mitzvah | the ceremony recognizing that a boy of the Jewish faith has reached manhood at age 13 |

beacon | a signal (as a lighthouse) for guidance |
behemoth | something of monstrous size or power |
beholden | owing someone else |
bisected | divided into two equal parts |
bleary | dull or dimmed especially from sleep or tiredness |

hostage | a person held by one group in a conflict to make someone else do something |
hunkered | staying in one place for a long time |
hysterical | uncontrolled intense emotion |
Idolize | to love or admire |
inconsolable | unable to be comforted |
indignation | anger aroused by something unjust, unworthy, or mean |
inevitable | bound to happen |
infidel | a person who does not believe in a particular religion |
instantaneous | happening in an instant (very quickly) |
instinctive | without purposeful thought; by natural instinct. |
Islam | the religion founded by the prophet Mohammad that follows Allah as the one god |
Kristallnacht | "Night of the Broken Glass" - a night of attacks against Jewish businesses and homes |
lenient | letting things go and not getting worked up about them |
leviathan | a large sea animal |
limbo | a transition or uncertain place |
lingering | being slow in leaving a place or activity |
makeshift | a temporary replacement |
maritime law | the set of laws and rules that people follow while they are at sea |
Muslim | someone who follows the religion of Islam |
mutineer | a person, especially a soldier or sailor, who rebels or refuses to obey the orders of a person in charge. |
Nazi stormtrooper | specialized soldiers in Nazi assault units |
negotiation | discussion aimed at reaching an agreement |
Nuremberg Laws | laws created by the Nazi party that restricted the Jewish people |
obscure | not easily seen or figured out |
oppressive | unreasonably heavy, difficult, or severe |
outstretched | extended or stretched out |
overwhelmed | defeated completely by something |
pandemonium | a wild uproar |
panoramic | a wide view surrounding someone |
parasites | an animal that takes nutrients from another animal OR person who constantly relies on or takes advantage of others and gives nothing in return. |

pennant | a long narrow flag or banner that comes to a point |
perpetual | continuing forever |
perversion | messing something up or making it bad |
piracy | the act of robbery or violence against the crew of a ship |
procession | a group of individuals moving along in an orderly way |
profusely | in large amounts |
protester | a person who publicly shows that they disagree with something, usually the government |
quarantine | keeping someone in one place to avoid spreading disease |
quarters | someone's living area or place they are staying |
quivering | trembling or shaking |
rationing | allowing only a certain amount of use per day |
reenergized | to get energy back |
refrain | a regularly repeated phrase or verse, especially at the end of each section of a poem or song |
reluctantly | in an unwilling way |
retreated | moved back from something, especially something dangerous |
rioting | the violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd. |

sacrilege | disrespect to someone's religion |
scuffle | to struggle in a confused way in a small space |

smuggle | someone who takes or brings things in secret |

Third Reich | another name for Nazi Germany under Hitler's rule |

toiletries | things used to take care of oneself, such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste |
Torah | the main books of Scripture for the Jewish faith |
tourist | someone who travels for fun |
tourniquet | a device (as a band of rubber) that stops or slows bleeding or blood flow |
transgression | violation of a law, command, or duty (something you did that was wrong) |
translator | a person who helps people understand each other from one language into another |
triumphant | celebrating victory |
truncheon | a police officer's club |
tyrant | a ruler who exercises complete power without any restrictions |
unfazed | not bothered or surprised |
unison | all together and sounding the same |
United Nations | an organization made up of representatives from countries around the world with the goal of keeping peace |
upholstered | covered in fabric |
voyage | a journey by water |
