Cornell Note Taking Strategy | Provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes |
Outlining Note Taking Strategy | This is the most common form of note taking; it naturally organizes the information in a highly structured, logical manner, forming a skeleton of the notes that serves as an excellent study guide when preparing for tests |
Mapping Note Taking Strategy | A visual system of condensing material to show relationships and importance; a diagram of the major points, with their significant sub-points, that support a topic; an organizing strategy used to improve memory by grouping material in a highly visual way |
Charting Note Taking Strategy | This is great for subject matter that can be broken down into categories, such as similarities/ differences, date/ event/ impact, pros/ cons, etc. It works best if students are able to identify categories and draw a table prior to the lecture |
Chronological Order | This puts information in sequence according to time |
Deductive (Direct) Order | Starts with generalization, and then support it with facts, research results, examples, and illustrations |
Inductive (Indirect) Order | Supplies examples, stories, facts, or reasons first, then draws conclusions from them |
Tables | Arranges facts and figures in rows and columns |
Bar Graphs | Shows quantities that are either not necessarily linked or demonstrate change over time |
Line Graphs | Used to track changes over short and long periods of time |
Pie Charts | Used when data shows how different categories relate to the whole at a particular point in time |
