Percent Vocabulary Study Stack Math 7A

QuestionAnswer
Sales tax as dollar amount Amount of money added on to the cost of items to help pay for roads, police, fire fighters, bridges etc.
Sales tax rate The percent added onto the cost of items. THE PERCENT (not the dollar amount) (rate = percentage)
Tip / gratuity Money paid in appreciation for a service given. Examples: waiters/barber/service people.
Markup Increase in the cost of an item to ensure a profit.
Discount Amount off the price of an item as a promotion
Interest (Both charged and earned) savings accounts earn interest. Money that is given to someone who lends money to another individual or organization. Usually given as a percentage. Examples: Bank account interests growing. High interest wanted. Credit card means interest owed. Low interest wanted.
Principle The initial investment amount.
Commission Money that is a percent of total sales. (cars, houses)
Decimal to percent Multiply the decimal by 100, attach a percent sign. 0.125 → percent x 100 = 12.5 %
Percent to decimal Divide the percent number by 100, remove the percent sign. 65.5 % → decimal ÷ 100 = 0.655
Fraction to percent Fraction -> decimal -> percent, attach a percent sign. 21/5 -> 4.2 → percent 21 ÷ 5 -> 4.2 x 100 = 420 %
Fraction to percent 2 Use equivalent fractions to set the denominator of the fraction = 100.
Percent to fraction Write the percent number over 100, remove the percent sign, simplify if possible.
Fraction to decimal Divide numerator by denominator. 14/8 = 14 ÷ 8 = 1.75
Decimal to fraction Read the decimal the way we’re supposed to!
