Percentage Vocab

TermDefinition
Sales Tax (as a dollar amount) Amount of money added on to the cost of items to help pay for roads, police, fire fighters, bridges etc
Sales Tax Rate (varies by county & state) The percent added onto the cost of items THE PERCENT (not the dollar amount)
Tip / Gratuity Money paid in appreciation for a service given Waiters/ barber/ service people
Markup Increase in the cost of an item to ensure a profit
Discount Amount off the price of an item as a promotion
Interest (in terms of banking accounts and credit cards) Savings accounts earn interest
Principle (in terms of banking) An initial investment
Commission Money that is a percent of total sales (cars, houses)
Decimal to Percent Multiply the decimal by 100, attach a percent sign
Percent to Decimal Divide the percent number by 100, remove the percent sign
Fraction to Percent (denominator of 100) fraction to decimal to percent, attach a percent sign
Fraction to Percent (denominator of another number than 100) use equivalent fractions to set the denominator of the fraction = 100 then fraction to decimal to percent, attach a percent sign
Percent to Fraction Write the percent number over 100, remove the percent sign, simplify if possible
Fraction to Decimal Divide numerator by denominator
Decimal to Fraction Read the decimal the way you’re supposed to
