What led to the Age of Faith? | Most of the monasteries but the most important one being the monastery founded at Cluny in France. Most of the popes there starting to reform the Church. |
Name three problems in the Church. | Some popes could not read their prayers and others had questionable morals. Also many village priests were married and had a family. |
Name the Secular Clergy and the Regular Clergy in order. | Regular Clergy goes Abbots, Monks, Friars, and Nuns. Secular Clergy goes Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Priests. |
How did the Church make money? | The Church collected a tax called a tithe which was one-tenth of yearly income from every Christian family. |
What were the two orders of friars and who founded them? | The first one was the Dominicans which was founded by a spanish priest called Dominic. The second was the Franciscans and was found by Francis of Assisi. |
What was the pros of Gothic architecture over Romanesque architecture? | Gothic architecture had ribbed vaults, pointed arches, tall spires, and lots of lights which was much better than Romanesque architecture. |
What did the pope say to the people in the crusades once they died? | The pope told the people in the crusade that once they died they would be assured a place in heaven. |
How many crusades were there? | There was a total of four crusades with a questionable fifth being the children's crusade. Only the first crusade had the most impact though. |
What were four changes from the crusades? | There was the return of trade and learning, the crusades actually weakened the power of the church, thousands of knights lost their lives, and it increased the power of the kings. |
What did the muslims gain from the crusades? (11.2) | The cons was that there was prejudice and hatred towards the muslims from the christians but the pros is that muslim culture was now spread out throughout Europe. |
What was one significant change from the Second Agricultural Revolution? | One change was switching from oxen to horses to plow their fields. |
What was a guilds purpose? | A guilds purpose was to improve the social and economic conditions for their members. |
What were some of the most common trade items? | Cloth, Bacon,Salt, Honey, and Wine as well as many others. |
How did the feudal system break down? | It broke down because if someone in the middle class had more money than the king why would the middle class person listen to them. |
Who was the most important philosopher of this time? (11.3) | Thomas Aquinas who believed that most religious truths could be proved by logical argument. |
Even though Hugh Capet and his sons as well as grandsons were weak rulers, what saved France from staying as a kingdom? | Their trade routes, over time their power would then spread throughout France and create a kingdom. |
What did Philip II do to make him a better ruler than his predecessors? | He tripled the land of France and made bailiffs to go collect taxes for him in other regions of France. |
How is the Estates-General similar but different to the English Parliament? | It is different the Estates-General never became an independent force that limited the king's power. They are similar because it increased the king's power towards nobility. |
How did Louis IX became a saint by the catholic church? | Louis IX became a saint in the church after he died because he was the ideal king. |
Who was the duke of Normandy? (11.4) | William the Conqueror, he then went on to defeat the Angelo-Saxons and conquer England. |
What signaled the end of a pope trying to force a monarch to obey him? | King Philip IV had asserted his authority of his bishops so when the Pope Boniface wanted Philip to obey him, he made the pope his prisoner in 1303. |
What was one effect of the Second Great Schism? | After the schism, people lost confidence in the Church's ability to lead the people. |
What killed one-third of Europe's population? | The bubonic plague, even though it took 4 years to spread around Europe it killed one-third of the population. |
How did the bubonic plague spread? | People didn't clean themselves so when black rats with fleas on them came around there was fleas all over the place because no one was clean. |
Why was there an end to the Age of Chivalry? (11.5) | When England developed the longbow. The training to become a knight was pointless if they would be killed from a distance. |
