the caste system an Indian social class system which determines the jobs people may take and who they associate with
varnas the four social classes of ancient India which people were born into (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, and the Sudras)
Nirvana an emotional or physical state, a feeling of perfect peace and happiness
The Four Noble truths 1. Life is full of suffering 2. People suffer because they desire worldly things 3. the way to end suffering is to stop desiring things 4. the only way to stop desiring things is to follow the Eightfold Path
Eightfold Path The eight steps that people can use to end suffering. It provided instructions on the right way to live.
Ashoka A prince of the Mauryan empire who made laws that encouraged people to do good deeds, practice nonviolence, and respect others. Convinced people to convert to Buddhism.
Siddhartha Gautama founded Buddhism and became known as the Buddha
The Aryans a group of nomads that moved in groups throughout India that lived in tribes, became farmers, , and developed Sanskrit.
Mauryan Empire One of the first great Indian empires that was ruled by Chandra Gupta and eventually was taken over by his grandson Ashoka.
Gupta Empire One of the first great Indian empires that was ruled by Samudra Gupta that expanded throughout northern India. It was known as 'the Golden Age" of Ancient India.
