Chapt.15 Aseptic Tec
Chapter 15 Aseptic Technique and Sterile Compounding
Aseptic technique: | Preparing and handling sterile products in a manner that prevents microbial contamination. |
Beyond-use date: | Date after which a product is no longer effective and should not be used. |
Chemical sterilization: | A method of cleaning equipment used for instruments that cannot be exposed to the high temperatures of steam sterilization. |
Conjunctiva: | Mucous membranes of the eyes. |
Dry heat sterilization: | A method of sterilization that uses heated dry air at a temperature of 160°C to 180°C (320°F to 365°F) for 90 minutes to 3 hours. |
Laminar airflow hood: | A system of circulating filtered air in parallel-flowing planes in hospitals or other health care facilities. The system reduces the risk of airborne contamination and exposure to chemical pollutants. |
Medical asepsis: | Complete destruction of organisms after they leave the body. |
Piggyback: | A method of adding medication from a vial to an intravenous (IV) medication by removing the contents of the vial using a syringe and injecting it into the IV bag of medication. |
Sanitization: | A process of cleansing to remove undesirable debris. |
Surgical asepsis: | The complete destruction of organisms before they enter the body. |
Disinfection: | The ability to kill microorganism on the surface of various items. |
Types of laminar airflow hoods: | Vertical and horizontal. |
Vertical laminar airflow hoods: | The air flows from top to bottom. |
Horizontal laminar airflow hoods: | The air flows from back to front. |
USP Chapter <797>: | Used for the sterile drug preparation. |
USP Chapter <800>: | Used for dealing with hazardous drugs. |
Ophthalmics: | Compounded for use in the eyes. |
