Chapter 15 Aseptic Technique and Sterile Compounding

Aseptic technique: Preparing and handling sterile products in a manner that prevents microbial contamination.
Beyond-use date: Date after which a product is no longer effective and should not be used.
Chemical sterilization: A method of cleaning equipment used for instruments that cannot be exposed to the high temperatures of steam sterilization.
Conjunctiva: Mucous membranes of the eyes.
Dry heat sterilization: A method of sterilization that uses heated dry air at a temperature of 160°C to 180°C (320°F to 365°F) for 90 minutes to 3 hours.
Laminar airflow hood: A system of circulating filtered air in parallel-flowing planes in hospitals or other health care facilities. The system reduces the risk of airborne contamination and exposure to chemical pollutants.
Medical asepsis: Complete destruction of organisms after they leave the body.
Piggyback: A method of adding medication from a vial to an intravenous (IV) medication by removing the contents of the vial using a syringe and injecting it into the IV bag of medication.
Sanitization: A process of cleansing to remove undesirable debris.
Surgical asepsis: The complete destruction of organisms before they enter the body.
Disinfection: The ability to kill microorganism on the surface of various items.
Types of laminar airflow hoods: Vertical and horizontal.
Vertical laminar airflow hoods: The air flows from top to bottom.
Horizontal laminar airflow hoods: The air flows from back to front.
USP Chapter <797>: Used for the sterile drug preparation.
USP Chapter <800>: Used for dealing with hazardous drugs.
Ophthalmics: Compounded for use in the eyes.
