Five Themes of Geography The five big ideas in geography.
Movement The theme in geography that describes how and why people, things, and ideas move from place to place.
Human/Environment Interaction The way people interact with and modify the environment.
Migration The movement of people from one area to another.
Push Factors The things that push people out of a place.
Pull Factors The things that pull people to a new place.
Slavery A system that allowed people to be treated as property and forced to work for free.
Underground Railroad A network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom.
Immigrate To permanently move to a new country.
Region An area with similar characteristics.
Culture A way a group of people live and what they have in common.
Core Democratic Values The fundamental beliefs that bring us together as Americans.
Diversity Valuing and understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing our individual differences.
Adapting to the Natural Environment When people make changes to fit their environment.
Natural Resources Something found in nature that can be used by people.
Fertile Soil Soil that is good for growing things.
Minerals A natural resource found in the ground such as iron ore, tin, salt, copper, etc.
Modifying the Environment When people change the environment to fit their needs.
Irrigation Providing water to land or crops to help growth using ditches or piplines.
Public Issue An issue that affects many different people.
