Legal Concept Terms

Unit 1 Terms

TermDefinition
Justice The quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness.
Access Being able to use the legal system and its resources easily and effectively.
Equality Being treated the same regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ect.
Fairness Freedom from bias and injustice. Ensure all people are treated well under the law.
Law A set of rules that are officially recognised, binding, and enforceable to all members of a community by legal Institutions (Police and Courts).
Rule A framework for what is right and wrong within a certain community or group and is enforced by that group. These do not apply to everyone and are not legally binding.
Custom A societal behaviour that is commonly respected and used. These are not enforced.
Values Things that society feels are important and should be respected. Principles, standards, and qualities that society find desirable.
Ethics Rules or standards that direct the behaviour of individuals and provides and framework for what is consider right and wrong.
Justice The quality of just, impartial and fair. Getting an outcome that protects people and respects the law.
Fairness Everyone is free from bias, injustice and are being treated well under the law.
Equality That everyone is treated the same regardless of gender, race etc.
Access The people are able to use the legal system and its resources easily and effectively
The Rule of Law That everyone is treated equally under the eyes of the law.
Anarchy An absence of law.
