Anatomy Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Abdomen The part of the body between the chest and the hindquarters
Axilla The "armpit" region: area of the chest under the shoulder and elbow
Bite In anatomy, this term is used to describe the apposition of teeth
Level Bite Some standards call for a "level bite" in which teeth must meet evenly at the edges, others call for a scissor bite
Carpus The equivilant of the human wrist
Cheek The fleshy portion of the side of the face
Chest The trunk of the body including between the elbows and along the ribs: also called the thorax
Thorax The trunk of the body including between the elbows and along the ribs: also called the chest
Coat The dog's/cat's hair, may be used in referring to the quantity, quality or color of the coat
Conformation The structure and appearance of the dog or cat: the quality as compared to the breed standard
Croup The part of the topline from the loin to the tail: extends from the last lumbar vertebra to the first coccygeal vertebra
Dewclaw The extra toe (vestigial) on the inside fo the leg. It is removed or absent in many breeds of dogs.
Elbow The joint between the forearm and upper arm: the point of the elbow is the area over the top of the ulna's anconeal process (also called the olecranon)
Foreface The head from the nose to the stop: includes the muzzle and the under jaw
Flank The ventral part of the abdomen in front of the hind legs
Forearm The area between the shoulder and the carpus: over the radius and the ulna
Front In descriptions of breed standards this is referring to the forelegs and shoulders plus the chest
Hock The joint between the stifle and the metatarsus: lower hind leg
Loin The portion of the back between the ribs and the croup: also referred to as the lumbar region
Muzzle The upper part of the foreface
Occiput The back or top of the head
Overshot Top teeth protrude beyond the lower teeth
Pads The soles of the feet
Pastern The lower portuion of the legs; metacarpal and metatarsalbones
Pinna The external part of the ear
Rump The upper hindquarters; gluteal region
Scissors bite The upper teeth overlap the bottom teeth and touch on the inside edges (this is the preferred conformation in many breeds)
Stifle The kneww; the joint between the femur (upper leg) and the tibia (lower leg), also refers to the leg between the knee joint and the hock

Tibia Lower leg
Stop The break or depression located between the top of the skull and the nose as viewed from the side: many breed standards call for a definite stop rather than a gradual transition between the skull and the nose
Thigh The part of the hind limb over the femur; upper bone of the hind leg
Undershot The teeth on the lower jaw protrudes beyond the top teeth
Upper arm The area from the shoulder blade to the forearm
Whiskers long hairs on the muzzle
Withers The area of the back between the shoulder blades; this is the highest part of the back most animals and the standard location used in measuring height
