Weather: | Spheric Phenomena that interact and affect the Enviornment and Life on Earth. |
Climate: | The long term average of variations in the Weather for a particular area. |
Question: Why is the Earth's surface heated unevenly? | Since the different surfaces of the Earth absorb different amounts of energy they will heat unevenly. |
Question: What is an air mass? | A body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. |
Question: What does the source region have to do with the air mass over it? | Source Region establishes heat and moisture equilibrium with the overlying air mass. |
Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | Air Masses form approximately 25 degrees north and south of the Equator over the dry, mostly arid regions of the world. It mainly occurs over deserts, including the Sahara, the deserts of Mexico, Australia, and the Arab Peninsula. |
Continental Polar Air Masses- What are their qualities and where do they form? | They primarily affect areas at high latitudes like Canada, the Northern United States, as well as Northern Asia. It is characterized by cold, dry weather with little cloud cover and precipitation, especially during the winter. |
Continental Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | These masses can develop over water or land, and are abbreviated with a “T.” Source regions include northern Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and the southwestern United States. |
Maritime Polar Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | Air Masses form over the freezing North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans near the Arctic. As a result, they are characterized by cold, moist, and unstable weather. |
Maritime Tropical Air Masses- what are their qualities and where do they form? | air masses are warm, moist, and usually unstable. Some maritime tropical air masses originate in the subtropical Pacific Ocean, where it is warm and air must travel a long distance over water. These rarely extend north or east of southern California. |
Arctic Air Masses- - what are their qualities and where do they form? | Air Masses form over the freezing North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans near the Arctic. As a result, they are characterized by cold, moist, and unstable weather. |
