Geometry Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
area | the number of square units needed to cover a surface square units |
area of a rectangle or paralellogram | area= length times width or (a=lw) area = base times height (a=bh) |
area of a triangle | area = base times height divided by 2 (a=bh/2) |
area of a trapezoid | area = (base 1 plus base 2) times height divided by 2 a= (b1 + b2)h /2 |
finding a missing dimension (length or width) when given the area | plug in what you are given, and divide both sides by the coefficient Ex. The area of a rectangle is 20 square units and the length is 10 units. What is the width. a = lw 20 = 10w 20/10=10w/10 width = 2 units |
Area of a complex figure | 1. Separate the figure into two (or more) shapes 2. find the area of each shape (You may need to add or subtract to figure out lengths of sides) 3. add the areas |
area of a shaded region | Find the area of the both shapes and subtract the smaller area from the bigger area. Ex. area of parallelogram a=bh a=7x5 a=35 ft. squared area of rectangle a=lw a=3x1 a = 3 ft. squared 35-3= 32 feet squared |
problem solving using area- find the price of carpet, paint, mulch, etc. | Find the area of the figure and multiply by how much the cover costs per square unit. Ex. A rectangular garden measures 3 feet by 10 feet and mulch costs $2 per square feet. How much will it cost to buy mulch for the garden? a=lw a= 3x10 a = 30 square feet 30 x 2= $60 |
