Cestodes
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cestodes | Tapeworms |
Proglottid | Individual boxlike components of the tapeworm strobila; three types are immature, mature, and gravid proglottids |
Scolex | The "head" of a tapeworm |
Acetabulum | One of four suckers on the anterior end of a true tapeworm; used to hold onto the lining of the small intestine |
Tegument | Body wall of a helminth |
Rostellum | Holdfast organ on the anterior end of an armed trip tapeworm; has backward-facing hooks used to anchor the tapeworm to the wall of the host's gut |
Armed Tapeworm | True tapeworm that possesses a rostellum on its anterior end |
Unarmed Tapeworm | True tapeworm that lacks a rostellum on its anterior end |
Strobila | Body of the tapeworm composed of individual proglottids (immature, mature, and gravid) |
Hermaphroditic | Having complete sets of both male and female reproductive organs |
Hexacanth Embryos | Type of tapeworm egg containing a six-toothed embryo (an embryo that contains six hooklets) |
Metacestode | Larval tapeworm found within the intermediate host; types include cysticercoid, cysticercus, coenurus, hydatid, tetrathyridium, procercoid, plerocercoid, and sparganum |
Bothria | Two slitlike holdfast organs on the anterior end of a pseudotapeworm |
Coracidium | Ciliated hexacanth embryo unique to the pseudotapeworms |
Copepod | An aquatic crustacean |
Procercoid | Type of metacestode stage unique to the pseudotapeworms; found within the first intermediate host, usually a tiny aquatic crustacean |
Plerocercoid | Type of metacestode stage unique to the pseudotapeworms; the stage where the pseudotapeworm becomes infective for the definitive host and is found within a second intermediate host (usually a fish) |
Psocids | Primitive insects often associated with vegetation |
Lappets | Round protuberances behind the suckers of the scolex in Anoplocephala perfoliata |
Embryophore | Tapeworm hexacanth embryo with striated eggshell |
Oncosphere | Growth ball released by the ingested egg of Echinococcus species |
Strobilocercus | Type of metacestode stage found in the liver of rats; has a scolex that attaches to a long neck, which connects to a fluid-filled bladder |
Coracidium | Ciliated hexacanth embryo unique to the pseudotapeworm (cotyledons); when ingested by the first intermediate host (an aquatic crustacean), forms a procercoid within the intermediate host |
