Clay Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Kiln | is an oven (or furnace) that heats to a very high temperature; any structure used to heat clay and make it hard and permanent |
| Wedging | kneading the clay on a board to prepare it for use; removes water, air bubbles, and makes clay more plastic by aligning clay particles |
| Slip | wet clay that is like a thin paste; it is used to attach two pieces of clay in much the same way that paste is used on paper |
| Score | is to cut or scratch a series of lines into a clay surface before putting slip on it; the small cut lines help the wet slip soak into the drier clay |
| Glaze | glass coating that makes the clay waterproof; made by combining powdered chemicals necessary to make glass with enough water to make it act like paint; it can be painted onto the surface of a pot or sculpture; usually applied to bisqueware |
| Pinch Pot | is a method of handbuilding in which the clay is shaped by inserting the thumb of one hand into the clay and lightly pinching with the thumb and fingers while slowly rotating the ball in the palm of the other hand. |
| Coils | is the technique of building ceramic forms by rolling out ropes of clay and joining them together with the fingers or scoring and slipping. |
| Firing | is the process of heating the pottery to a specific temperature in order to bring about a particular change in the clay or the surface. |
| Leather Hard | is clay that is partially dry, but can be carved and have other pieces added to it is called |
| Bone Dry | Clay that is completely dry and is very fragile |
| Bisque | Clay that has been fired once |
| Slab Building | Rolling clay flat with a rolling pin or slab roller is what hand building method |
| Canvas | is the fabric called that you used to keep the clay from sticking to the table |
| Clay | Fine grained earth materials formed by the decomposition of rocks. |
| Texture | is the quality of the surface. Examples are smooth, rough, bumpy, etc. |
| 3-Dimensional | when all three dimensions (length, height, and depth) can be touched and felt. |
| Hand-Building | Construction processes that include pinching, coiling or building with slabs. |
| Greenware | is clay that has not yet had heat applied to it. |
| Bisqueware | Clay that has been fired one time |
