Central Idea | the main message or idea expressed in a nonfiction text. A central idea is always related to the author’s purpose. In most essays, the central idea is stated directly. in narrative nonfiction, the author says the central detail through details. |
author’s purpose | the reason that an author writes a text |
Theme | the message or lesson of a story. To figure out the implied theme look closely at details, think about how they fit together, and consider what larger meaning they convey |
Setting | where or when the story takes place. |
Plot | story line, or sequence of events in a story. |
Sequence | the order of events in fiction and nonfiction text. |
Main idea | is what a paragraph or a passage is mostly about. |
Supporting details | give more information, in the form of facts, opinions, and examples, about the main idea. Supporting details answer the questions who, what, where, when, how, and why. |
Literary Devices | descriptive language or writing tools used to make writing more interesting, and includes special ways of comparing two different things. |
Simile | compares two different things using like or as. |
Metaphor | compares two different things by describing how one thing is another, and does not use the words like or as. |
Personification | assigning human qualities to objects and animals. |
Alliteration | repetition of the initial consonant of a series of words. |
