TermDefinition
Theoretical Probability the number of favourable outcomes written as a fraction of the total number of possible outcomes
Experimental Probability the probability of an event calculated from experimental results (favourable outcomes/# of trials)
Subjective Judgement decisions made based on your "gut feeling"
Probability refers to the likelihood that an event will occur.
Population the set of all things or people being considered
Census the entire population is surveyed (used when population is small)
Sample a portion of the population is being surveyed (used when population is large)
Bias the survey question influences response in favour of, or against the topic of data collection
Use of language use of language could lead people to give a particular answer
Time length of the survey
Timing when the data or survey is being collected and done. This could produce different results
Cost the price of running the survey
Privacy if the data collected is personal, person may not want to participate or may give an untrue answer on purpose (#anonymous)
Cultural Sensitivity Being aware of other cultures in your surveys
Simple Random Sampling Each member of a population has an equal chance of being selected
Stratified Random Sampling Some members from each group are randomly selected
Cluster Sampling Every member of each randomly chosen group of the population is selected
Self Selected Sampling (voluntary) Only those who are interested and volunteered will participate
Convenience Sampling Only members of the population who are convenient to include are selected
Systematic Sampling Every nth member of the population is selected. Often a method used at a manufacturing level
