What is homeostasis? Multiple systems working together to keep the body in balance.
What are the four major groups of biomolecules? Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids? Protein is the most abundant organic compound in the body and is divided by being structural and functional.
Name the four bases of a DNA molecule Adenine, thymine, Guanine, and Cytosine - all responsible for storing genetic information.
What is an enzyme and its function? Enzymes are proteins that initiate a chemical reaction by reducing the amount of energy needed for a specific reaction. An example is Hydrolase: which hydrolyzes food molecules.
What are allosteric effectors: Factors such as temperature, hydrogen concentration, or pH that can affect the function of an enzyme. What are the characeristics of skeletal muscle?
What are the characeristics of skeletal muscle? Having one nucleus per cell, being attached to bone and having striations.
What are the characteristics of smooth muscles? Having one nucleus per cell, composing the walls of the viscera, and usually not being under voluntary control.
What are Oligodendrocytes? Cells that form the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain from harmful substances in the blood.
How many bones does the human body have an what are its categories? 206 bones placed into the following categories: long, short, flat, irregular, and sesamoid. They bear weight, act as levers, protect, store minerals, and support delicate structures.
Which two hormones are secreted during blood calcium levels? Parathyroid and calcitonin.
What initiates the contraction of a muscle? The neurotransmitter, acetylcholine.
What are myofilaments? The structure of myofibrils involved during muscle contraction, made up of 4 proteins: myosin, actin, tropomyosin, and troponin.
