TermDefinition
mixed number a number with a whole number and fraction
improper fraction a fraction where the numerator (top) is larger (or equal) than the denominator (bottom)
change a mixed number into an improper fraction Numerator (top): multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator Denominator: stays the same
scale up Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number (to make a common denominator)
Add or Subtract Fractions Find a common denominator, then find the equivalent fractions, then add numerators, denominator stays same. Simplify.
Add or sutract mixed numbers (with unlike denominators) Find the lowest common denominator (LCM)- Scale the fractions up so that they have the same denominator. Add or subtract the numerators, keep the denominator the same. Regroup if necessary. Add or subtract the whole numbers. Simplify if necessary.
Regroup fraction to subtract borrow from the whole number -with a fraction, you borrow the amount of the denominator and add it to the numerator
multiply fractions Multiply numerators and denominators Cross cancel OR simplify if necessary
simplify a fraction Divide both the top and bottom of the fraction by the Greatest Common Factor. Example: Simplify the fraction 8/12 : 1. The largest number that goes exactly into both 8 and 12 is 4, so the Greatest Common Factor is 4.
cross cancel Simplifying BEFORE you multiply the fractions together. You must do this diagonally, by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.
Multiply Mixed Numbers Change them into improper Fractions, then use the rules for Multiplying Fractions
GCF (Greatest Common Factor) The largest factor that two or more numbers have in common.
Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest number that is a common multiple of two or more numbers ( LCM of 8&12 is 24)
