Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 | Law enacted in 1990 to protect citizens with disabilities from discrimination with regard to employment, education, and public accomodations |
Civil Rights act of 1964 | Law that made it illegal to discriminate against someone for his or her color, sex, race, religion, or national origin with regard to voting and public access |
Consumer Credit Protection Act | Law that requires providers to be up front about fees and finance charges when offering credit |
Contract | Agreement between individuals or parties creating mutual obligations and enforceable by law |
Discrimination | Treatment of a person either in opposition of or in favor of, based on bias or prejudice |
Due process | Procedures or actions followed to safeguard individual rights |
Emotional intelligence (EI) | Individuals skill to perceive, understand, reason with, and manage his or her emotions and the emotions and behaviors of others |
Emotional Quotient (EQ) | Measurement of emotional intelligence |
Employment-at-will | Employment contract that allows either the employer or the employee to terminate employment without cause |
Employment Protection Act | Laws that govern handling of employees or potential employees that include interviewing, equal opportunity employment, disability, and compensation and benefits |
Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972 | Act that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, and marital or familial status |
Equal Pay act of 1963 | Act that prohibits wage differentials based on sex |
Fair Billing Act | Law that requires businesses to provide prompt written response to billing complaints and investigation of possible billing errors |
Fair Credit Reporting Act | Law that protects patients from inaccurate information on their credit reports |
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act | Law that prohibits debt collectors, including physician office staff, from using deceptive/abusive practices in the collection of debt |
Family Medical Leave Act 1993 | Requires employers with 50 or more employees to allow eligible employees to take unpaid leave to care for family illness or stay home after birth of a child |
OSHA | Federal Agency within the department of labor that designs, regulates, and monitors standards for safety |
Professionalism | Conduct in the workplace |
Qui tam | "Who as well" lawsuit where a private citizen exposes fraud upon the government and files a lawsuit on the governments behalf |
Sexual Harassment | Use of power or intimidation over an individual for sexual favors |
Workers Comp | Mandated insurance program that covers medical costs and wage replacement for employees injured on the job |
Workplace Violence | Any act or threat of physical violence, harassment,intimidation, or other disruptive behavior that causes fear in the workplace |
