Civics vocab C

QuestionAnswer
Law A system of rules that a particular country or community recognises as regulating the actions of its members
Statute law Written law passed by governments at state and Federal level
Common law Is created by decisions of judges which act as binding precedents for later decisions
Bill A proposal for a new law or a change to an existing one
Act A law passed by both Houses of Parliament that has received Royal Assent
Precedent A principle or rule established in a previous legal case that is then used by the court or other judicial bodies when deciding later cases with similar issues
Despatch box Two of these sit on the desk in Parliament where the Prime Minister sits. They are exact copies of those at Westminster prior to the 1941 bombings. The Prime Ministers, Ministers and members of the opposition executive speak 'from the despatch box'.
Hansard The report of the proceedings of the Australian Parliament and its committees
Parliament In Australia, is the legislative branch of the government consisting of three elements: the Crown, the Senate and the House of Representatives
Judge A person who is in charge of a trial in a court and decides on punishments for those proven guilty
