Centralized Government | When a single leader/government presides over a number of smaller governments. |
Empire | A group of nations united under a single, centralized government/leader. |
Polis | A city-state in ancient Greece. |
Aqueduct | A man-made channel that conducted water; as seen in ancient Rome. |
Democracy | rule by the people or a government in which many people are able to participate |
Oligarchy | rule by a few or a government in which a small group of people are able to participate |
Satrap | a provincial governor in the ancient Persian empire. |
Tribune | an official in ancient Rome chosen by the plebeians to protect their interests. |
Triumvirate | Rule by three or a government in which three people equally share power; found in ancient Rome. |
Patrician | In ancient Rome, a member of the privileged upper class. |
Satrapies | Provinces in the Persian Empire. |
Citizen | a legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized. |
Hellenism | blending of Greek, Macedonian, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian cultures due to Alexander the Great's conquests |
Plebeian | a term from ancient Rome, meaning "commoners" or often farmers, not an aristocrat. |
Senate | In ancient Rome, the supreme governing body, was originally made up only of aristocrats. |
Consul | a member of the Roman government with limited executive powers, including power over the army and making decisions. |
Legacy | an amount of money or property left to someone in a will |
Tolerance | allowing, permitting or accepting of an action, idea, object, or person which one dislikes or disagrees with. |
Civic Participation | taking part in formal political processes and community activities outside of government |
Caste System | a set of rigid social categories that determined not only a person's occupation and economic potential, but also his or her position in society. |
Social Mobility | Movement of individuals or groups from one position in a society's stratification system to another |
Filal Piety | An expectation of some societies in which children are expected to show respect for their parents, often in ways such as honoring their wishes even into adulthood. |
Legalism | excessive adherence to law or formula or "following the letter of the law". |
Reincarnation | The rebirth of a soul in a new body. |
