Creative Writing class vocab

TermDefinition
Protagonist The main character. Usually the "good guy"
Antagonist The one working against the protagonist. Usually the "Bad guy"
Setting Where/when the story takes place
Exaggerated Elements Anything that happens that is hard to believe. Animals that talk, if someone goes from hating someone to all of a sudden loving someone
Similie A comparison using "like" or "as". It is hot as a desert. She runs fast like a cheetah.
Metaphor A comparison without "like" or "as". It is a desert, he is a class clown.
Hubris excessive pride or self-confidence that usually causes something bad to happen
Motif A topic that is repeated
Author's craft Everything authors use to create their arguement or story
Conventions the features that define a genre. "The sotry does this, this, and this so it is a fairy tale."
Poetic justice when something happens that fits karma. If a hard-working couple wins the lottery after years of being good citizens, this is a positive example of poetic justice. If a corupt businessman or politician is cought in a scandal and loses his position, same
Symbolism the use of symbols that stand for something else. the flag stands for freedom. Dove means peace. White means innocence.
Portray Describe in a certain way. Picture someone is a certain way.
Sensory Has to do with the five senses
Dwelling a home/living space
Conflict problem
Theme An idea, message, or lesson in stories. Ex. "Hard work pays off." "Always be yourself."
