Anaconda Plan | military strategy proposed by Union General Winfield Scott early in the American Civil War. This called for a naval blockade of the Confederate littoral, a thrust down the Mississippi, and the strangulation of the South by Union land and naval forces. |
Battle of Gettysburg | a battle of the American Civil War (1863); the defeat of Robert E. Lee's invading Confederate Army was a major victory for the Union. |
Battle of Vicksburg | a decisive Union victory during the American Civil War that divided the Confederacy and cemented the reputation of Union General Ulysses S. Grant. |
Carpetbaggers | a person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction. |
Dred Scott v. Sanford | the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on March 6, 1857, that having lived in a free state and territory did not entitle an enslaved person, to his freedom. The decision argued that, as someone's property, was not a citizen and could not sue in a federal court. |
Emancipation Proclamation | an edict issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves of the Confederate states in rebellion against the Union. |
Fort Sumter | a sea fort built on an artificial island protecting Charleston, South Carolina from naval invasion. |
14th Amendment | granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including former enslaved people—and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.” |
