What is the difference between force, evolutionary, and divine right theories? | Force explains that someone took over through force (like a dictatorship), evolutionary explains that governments evolved over time from basic family structures, and divine right explains that god or multiple gods put a person in charge |
What did John Locke and Thomas Hobbes believe about government and people? | Hobbes believed people were born inherently selfish and therefore a strict government like a dictatorship was necessary. Locke believed people were born with blank slates and therefore governments needed to guide people to do good, like in a democracy |
What are the 6 purposes of American government? | Form a more perfect union; secure blessings of liberty; insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, establish justice |

What is the difference between direct and indirect democracy? What type does the US have? | In a direct democracy, the people vote for their leaders and on all decisions. In an indirect democracy, the people vote on representatives to make decisions for them (also called a republic) |
Is the US an oligarchy? Why or why not? | Your opinion – an oligarchy is a form of government where a small group of elites (usually wealthy) have more political power than the rest of the people. |
What is the difference between unitary, federal, and confederate governments? Which type does the US have? | unitary government has a central government a federal government has a central government and shared power with local governments a confederate government is one with no central government and instead an alliance of states the US has a federal government |
What is the difference between a presidential and parliamentary government? Which type does the US have? | In a presidential system the people elect their executive and legislators separately; in a parliamentary system, the people elect their legislators who then choose an executive – the US has a presidential system |
How does the internet affect American democracy both negatively and positively? | Opinion – be able to discuss both |
Why did settlers from England come to the colonies in America? | Economic, religious, and personal freedom |
What influences of government did English settlers bring with them to America? | Limited government, ordered government, representative government |
How did the landmark English documents influence American government? | They all either limited the king’s power or guaranteed rights of citizens – both were fundamental ideas in the creation of the US government |
What created tension between the English colonies and the King? | England began to exert more control of the colonies in the forms of taxes |
What was the purpose and result of the Stamp Act Congress? | To try to solve issues of the Stamp Act’s tax on paper, they met to discuss how to deal with England – this was the first time the colonies gathered to discuss issues |
What was the purpose and result of the First Continental Congress? | To try to again solve the problems with England, but specifically they agreed to meet again, setting a precedent of continued meeting to work against England |
What was the purpose and result of the Second Continental Congress? | To try again solve the issues with England, but they ended up creating and appointing a leader for the Continental Army |
What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence? | To officially separate with England and declare America independent |
What made the Articles of Confederation weak? | It could not tax, it did not have a leader or a judicial system, and it could not stop Shays’ Rebellion |
What qualities did the delegates at the Constitutional Convention have? | They were wealthy, young, and educated |
What was the purpose and result of the Constitutional Convention? | The purpose was originally to revise the Articles of Confederation, but they eventually scrapped it entirely and created a new Constitution |
What was the difference between the New Jersey and Virginia Plans? | The Virgina Plan called for a bicameral legislature with representation based on population for each state, while the New Jersey Plan called for a unicameral legislature with representation equal among the states |
What did the states argue over at the Constitutional Convention? | They argued over how representation would be determined in Congress – equal among the states or by population. They also argued if slaves would count towards representation or not. |
