Virginia Company: Jamestown The VA Co. Founded Jamestown and began to expand out into VA. They were a joint stock company
Captain John Smith Took charge of Jamestown after they nearly starved in the winter.
Powhatan War The Native Americans that Jamestown interacted with. 1622. Jamestown had more conflict with them. Jamestown needed protection from VA co. 300 colonists killed, became royal colony.
Pilgrims (Seperatists) Seperatists (type of puritan) who went to Holland, then Plymouth Rock to found a religious safe haven for themselves. The were being prosecuted in England
John Winthrop (City on a Hill) Winthrop's speech to rally the Pilgrims to make a religous haven in the name of God and for it to be a model (City on a Hill) for other colonists
Joint-Stock Company Companys founded to spread the risk of investment in New World Colonization
Sir William Berkeley Governor of VA who promoted trade with Native Americas. First governor, and governor during bacon's rebellion
Headright System The VA co would give you acreage if you paid your way to the New World. Extra land if you had servants. It was an incentive to colonize the New World
Stono Rebellion Large Slave revolt south of Charleston, got captured and tortured and killed.
Wampanaogs Native Americans in Massachusetts. Involved in King Phillips War
Quakers Society of Friends. Believed in passiveness, connection with god, and equality
Glorious Revolution When the power in England shifted from Crown to Parliament. WIlliam and Mary signed some stuff.
Deleware Second Pennysylvania kinda deal.
George Whitefield Evangelicist from England. Went up and down 13 colonies preaching spiritual revival.
Bacon's Rebellion Natives attacked indentured servants settling, VA co wouldn't help so Bacon attacked back and burned Jamestown.
British Civil War Charles disbanded Parliament then brought them back, protestant parliament fought him. Cromwell and the parliamentarians fought the royalists.
John Rolfe Made tobacco growing popular
Puritans Wanted to purify the anglican church. Includes seperatists
Great Migration Puritan Migration to New World
Mayflower Compact Legal system put into action by the pilgrims. Contract for self governance. Religious government.
Maryland act of toleration An attempt to protect the catholics in maryland. It didn't work
Roger Williams Founded Rhode Island. Was kicked out of Mass. found shelter with the Natives and founded RI. He bought land from Natives. Mass kicked out for wanting to purify the church towards individuality and religious freedom and church vs state seperation
Metacomet (King Philip) A Christian Native warned of Wampanoag attacks and was found dead in a frozen pond. They convicted and hung three natives. Wampanoag attacks, pilgrims attacked wampanoag village and resulted in loss of wampanoag power.
Anne Hutchinson Bible discussion/preaching in Mass, got kicked out and left for RI. Went to NY after family died, then she died.
William Penn Quaker who founded PA because quakers were being prosecuted. Inherited PA, and encouraged religious freedom while establishing gov't based on quaker ideals.
Middle Passage The ships over to the New World for the Slaves. VERY BAD CONDITIONS
Great Awakening The religious revival movement spurred by stale religion and enlightenment in Europe. Started by the Itenerants (within the evangelicists)
Salem Witch Trials Women were accused witchcraft. Salem Mass. Isolated Incident. Yearlong paranoia. Governor stepped in when wife got accused.
Enlightenement Shift towards critical thinking and reasoning in Europe, spread to USA. Franklin and John Locke.
Deists Believed that god set the world in motion and doesn't run it.
John Calvin Protestant reformation. He believed in Pre Destination.
Plymouth Colony Governed by Mayflower Compact. Seperatists from England, Holland, to New World.
Massachusetts Bay Colony John Winthrop got Royal Charter and moved offices over to Mass. They were puritans.
VA house of Burgesses First legislative body in the colonies. Modeled after parliament and was democratic. It was Bicameral.
James Oglethorpe Founded Georgia as an experiment with different social classes and a military blockade from the Spanish in Florida. 21 trustees in charge, Oglethorpe was the guy in the head of it.
Worthy Poor In debt people who could redeem themselves.
Jonathan Edwards Preacher. Brought Great Awakening through scary sermons in NE. Restored local religion with emotionally charged preaching.
Benjamin Franklin Enlightenment guy who represented the American enlightenment.
