Etiology Study of the cause of disease
Pathogenesis Sequence of events that leads to or underlies a disease
Anorexia Loss of appetite or absence of food, especially when prolonged
Stertor Inspiratory noise similar to snoring usually caused by obstruction to airflow at the pharynx or larynx
Stridor A harsh, high-pitched respiratory sound usually caused by obstruction of airflow at the pharynx or larynx
Hemoptysis Coughing up blood, or blood in sputum
Pleural Effusion Fluid buildup in the space surrounding the lungs within the thorax
Orthopnea Shortness of breath when lying down
Hypoxia Low tissue oxygen levels
Hypoxemia Low blood oxygen levels
Regurgitation Flow of stomach contents into the esophagus and mouth unaccompanied by retching, as distinguished from vomiting, which occurs as forceful expulsion of stomach contents into the esophagus and mouth preceded by retching
Hematemesis Vomiting blood
Hematochezia Frank, red blood in feces
Melena Passage of dark tarry stools that contain decomposing blood; usually an indication of bleeding in the upper part of the alimentary tract, especially the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
Tenesmus Distressing but ineffectual urge to evacuate the rectum or urinary bladder
Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) Altered cognitive and neurologic function as a result of buildup of toxins in the bloodstream that are normally removed by the liver
Polyuria Excessive production of urine
Polydipsia A condition evidenced by increased levels of thirst and excessive drinking
Azotemia Condition in which blood has increased concentrations of nitrogenous wastes, like blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
