2nd Grade Social Studies New World Explorers

EXPLORERFACTS
Leif Erikson This Viking explored present-day Canada around the year 1,000.
Christopher Columbus In the 1400's, Spain hired this explorer to find a water route to Asia. Instead, he found islands in the present-day Carribean Sea.
Amerigo Vespucius In the early 1500's, Germany hired him to map the New World. America was named after him.
John Cabot In 1497 he claimed land in present-day Canada for England.
Sir Walter Raleigh In the late 1500's he claimed present-day Virginia for England
Hernando deSoto In 1539 he explored the Mississippi River for Spain.
La Salle In 1682, he claimed the mouth of the Mississippi River for France.
