Roots of Democracy

QuestionAnswer
Representative Government a political system in which power is exercised by elected leaders who work in the interests of the people.
Rule of Law the principle that government is based on clear and fairly enforced laws and that no one is above the law.
Limited Government a political system in which the powers exercised by the government are restricted, usually by a written constitution.
Individual Rights specific rights and liberties that can be claimed by citizens. freedom of speech and religion are examples.
Natural Rights rights that all people have by virtue of being human; the right to liberty, and ownership of property produced or gained through one's own labors.
Separation of Powers the idea that the powers of a government should be split between two or more branches to prevent any one person or group from gaining too much power.
Popular Sovereignty the principle that the people are the ultimate source of the authority and legitimacy of a government.
Constitutionalism the idea that government should be based on an established set of written principles.
Stamp Act A tax placed on the colonists by Britain to earn revenue after the French and Indian War.
French and Indian War A war resulting in a British victory but ending the period of benign neglect in the colonies.
Majority Rule When more than half of the people agree to something
Federalists supporters of ratification of the U.S. Constitution, who favored the creation of a strong federal government that shared power with the states.
Anti-Federalists opponents of ratification of the U.S. Constitution, who favored the loose association of states established under the Articles of Confederation.
Benign Neglect Period of time when Great Britain left the colonies alone to manage their own affairs.
Virginia House of Burgesses The first elected assembly in the colonies; established in 1619.
Mayflower Compact An agreement among Massachusetts colonists to live under a "civil body politic" in 1620.
