Nature of Matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Physics | Study of matter |
Matter | Anything that has mass/inertia |
Inertia | Property of matter that resists change/movement |
Density | Mass over volume |
Specific gravity | Sample density divided by the standard density |
Molecule | Chemical combination of 2 or more atoms |
Elemental molecule | Molecules of the same type |
Compound | Molecules that form different elements |
Pure substance | Substances containing only 1 type of atom |
Mixtures | Physical combination of 2 or more elements/compounds |
Homogeneous mixture | Mixture that is uniformly combined |
Heterogeneous mixture | Mixture that is unevenly distributed |
Mass | Amount of matter/inertia, does not change |
Weight | How much gravity pulls on something, can change depending on gravity |
Solid | Definite shape and volume, low energy particles packed together, difficult to compress |
Liquid | Definite volume, indefinite shape, more energy than solids, molecules move around, takes shape of container |
Gas | Indefinite shape and volume, high energy particles with total freedom of movement, easy to compress |
Plasma | Highly ionized gas that has many positive ions and electrons, only found in extremely high temperatures where the electrons separate |
Standard density for solids/liquids | Water (1) |
Standard density for gasses | Hydrogen (0.0899) |
