What article talks about and explains the powers of Congress? Article 1 of the Constitution.
How is the number of representatives each state gets determined? By the popular of the state.
What is the total number of Representatives that are divided by the 50 states in the House of Representatives? 435 representatives.
What is a Census? A count or survey of the population.
What is Reapportionment? The adjustments of seats in the House of Representatives based on population changes.
What is Gerrymandering? To manipulate the boundaries of an electoral constituency to favor one party.
What is Cracking? Drawing electoral districts that divide the population of a constituency across several districts.
What is Packing? Drawing electoral districts to consolidate the population of a constituency into a small number of districts.
What are the qualifications to be a member of the House of Representatives? They have to be at least 25 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years.
How long is a House of Representatives term? 2 years.
What is incumbent? Necessary for someone as a duty or responsibility.
Why do they have an advantage at times? Name recognition, campaign war chests, public perceptions of President and Congress, weak challengers.
How is the leader of the House chosen? The Speaker of the House is elected at the beginning of a new Congress by a majority of the Representatives.
What are the duties and powers of the Speaker? The Speaker maintains order, manages its proceedings, and governs the administration of its business.
What are the duties and responsibilities of the majority leaders in each house of Congress? Assist incumbents and challengers in raising campaign funds, and they travel to scores of House districts to campaign with either incumbents or challengers of their party.
What are the duties and responsibilities of the majority and minority whips in each house of Congress? Responsible for assisting bringing the party's bills to the House floor, maintaining communication between the leadership of the party and its members, counting votes on key legislation, and persuading Members to vote for the party position.
How many senators are selected from each state? 2 senators.
How many total senators are there? 100 senators.
What are the qualifications to be a member of the Senate? They have to be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for 9 years, and living in the state they represent.
How long is a Senate term? 6 years.
Who is the leader of the senate? What are their responsibilities? The vice president, Kamala Harris, tie breaker
Who takes over if the vice president is not able to attend and fulfill his obligations to the senate? President pro-tempore
What are congress's powers in regard to the military? Provide for the common defense, declare war, raise and support an Army and Navy, make rules and regulations for the military
Who determines the winner of the presidential election if no one reaches the 270 number? The House of Representatives
What are the 5 major principals of the constitution? popular sovereignty, federalism, separation of powers, checks and balance, judicial review, and limited government
What are the qualifications to be president of the United States? 35 years old, born USA citizen, lived in the United States for 14 years
How is the president elected? The Electoral College
How are each state's electoral college votes determined? The number of senators and representatives
How many total electoral college votes are there to possibly win? 538 votes
How many to win? 270 votes
Who determines the winner of the election if there is a tie or someone does not reach 270? The House of Representatives
What is the "winner take all" system? if you win you take it all, whichever candidate wins the popular vote, wins all the states electoral votes
What is special about Maine and Nebraska in the electoral college? They both split their electoral votes among two candidates based on vote percentage
How long is a presidential term? 4 years
How many terms or years can a president serve 2 terms, 10 years
What amendment set the limits on how long a president can serve? 22
How many terms can a vice president serve? There is no term limit.
What happens if a president cannot serve due to illness, mental incapacity, not abiding to law or death? The vice president takes over.
Who is the first non-elected official to become president? The Secretary of State
What is the president's job as chief executive and what is he in charge of? Implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress and appoints the heads of the federal agencies
What is an executive order? A command from the president that has a force of law
In regards to federal judges... what is the president's job? To appoint officials
What is a pardon? To forgive someone for a crime and free them from punishment
What is the war powers act? The president must notify congress within 48 hours of sending troops into battle, troop must come back home after 60 days unless congress approves to remain there
How is the president the legislative leader? The president proposes laws they want
As head of state what does the president have to do? Being the living symbol of the nation, carrying out ceremonial functions
What is foreign policy? A plan for dealing with other nations
What are the goals of foreign policy? National security, keep the country safe, encourage international trade, promote world peace, promote democracy around the world
What is an executive agreement and does this need congressional approval? Agreement between the president and leader of another country. The senate doesn't need to approve.
Appointing ambassadors is another presidential job... what is an ambassador? Accredit diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country.
