What are the Qualifications to be President of the United States? Must be 35 years old, has to be born in the United States, and has to live in the United States fro 14 years.
How is the President elected? The electoral collage
How are each states electoral college votes determined? Every State is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of senators and representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation
How many total electoral votes are there to possibly win? 538
How many electoral college votes will win the election? 270
Who determines the winner of the election if there is a tie or someone does not reach 270? The House of Representatives
What is the "winner take all" system? A candidate can win the election by winning only 11 states.
What is special about Maine and Nebraska in the Electoral College? They can split their electoral votes among two candidates based on vote percentage
How long is a Presidential term? 4 years
How many terms and or years can a President serve? 2 terms or 10 years
What amendment set the limits on how long a President can serve? The 22nd amendment
How many terms can the Vice President serve? As many times as the want
What happens if the President cannot serve due to illness, mental incapacity, not abiding to law or death? The Vice President would take over as the new President
What amendment takes the power from the President and gives it to the Vice President? The 25th amendment
What is Presidential Succession? Specifically to officers beyond the vice president acting as president rather than becoming president
If the President were to be unseated what is the order of succession? Vice President, Speaker of the House, President Pro-Tempore, Secretary of States
Who is the first non-elected official to become President? The Vice President.
What is the Presidents's job as Chief Executive and what is he in charge of? He carries out nations laws and he is in charge of 15 cabinet department and 3 million government workers.
What is an executive order? Command from the President that has the force of the law
What is the President's job? To keep the country safe and protect us from terrorist.
What is a Pardon/ To forgive someone for a crime and free them from punishment.
What is a reprieve? Order to delay a person's punishment.
What is Amnesty? A pardon given to a group people.
What is the War Powers Act? President must notify Congress within 48 hours of sending troops into battle. Troops must come home after 60 days unless Congress grants approval to remain.
How is the President the Legislative Leader? The President has the power either to sign legislation into law or to veto bills enacted by Congress
As Head of State, what does the President have to do? The execution and enforcement of the laws created by Congress.
What is Foreign Policy? a government's strategy in dealing with other nations
What are the goals of Foreign Policy? Security, prosperity, and the creation of a better world
What is an executive agreement and does this need Congressional approval? an agreement between the United States and a foreign government that is less formal than a treaty and no
What is an ambassador? an accredited diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country.
