What are the sociological benefits of sport? - Sport creates and maintains social values such as hard work and fair play, discipline, sacrifice and commitment. - Sport participation can lead to greater well-being. - Sport can contribute to positive development and stability in society.
What are the sociological costs of sport? Sport can also be very exclusive and divisive in terms of race, class, gender, age, ability, and sexual orientation. This dark side of participation includes aspects of sexual and emotional abuse, burnout, steroid use, eating disorders, and anxiety.
What are the 4 areas in sport that contribute to the most troubling aspects? - Sexism - Homophobia - Heterosexism - Racism

What are Gender roles? A set of perceived behavioral norms associated particularly with males or females in a given social group or system.
What is Title IX? Federal legislation passed in 1962 that amended the 1964 Civil Rights Act and prohibited sex discrimination in educational settings.
What is Homophobia? An irrational fear, a contempt, or an antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.
Why is there an intolerance for homosexuals in men's sport? Intolerance for homosexuals in men’s sport is due to the historical role of sport as training and proving ground for men to establish masculinity.
What is Heterosexism? An ideology and a behaviour that promotes privilege for dominant groups.
What is Race Logic? A pattern of athletic success in which Black athletes; successes are attributed to natural athletic abilities and genetic advantage. While White athletes' achievements are attributed to discipline, intelligence, and hard work
What is Stacking? A disproportionate allocation of athletes to central and non-central positions as a function of their race or ethnicity.
What has led to sport being a vehicle for social transformation? Sport has enormous popularity and its ability to reach across social, political, and economic divides make it one of the few institutions that can serve as a catalyst for change.
