June 21, 1788 Adoption of the US Constitution | The US Constitution leaves voting decisions to the states |
15th Amendment 1870 | Gave voting rights to (male) African Americans |
19th Amendment 1920 | Gave voting rights to women |
Indian Citizenship Act 1924 | Gave citizenship to Native Americans but left voting rights as state decisions |
23rd Amendment 1961 | Gave people living in Washington DC the right to vot for their elector |
24th Amendment 1964 | Stoppped poll taxes, particularly in the south |
Voting Rights Act of 1965 | Gave the right to vot regardless of the person's race. Gave national government some control over state election policies |
26th Amendment 1961 | Makes it so that you have to be 18 years or older in order to be able to vote in an election |
Motor Voter Law 1993 | Made it wasier to register to vote |
Helby County v. Holder 2013 | This case led to the ban of discriminatory voting practices. Took away the power of the Voting Rights act of 1965 as state's no longer need to get voting policies approved by Congress |
