where did Mr. C live? near George, above the shoemaker's window
what did Mr. C like to read ? all newspapers, especially the NY Times
how is the NY TImes different from other newspapers? it's a serious newspaper, written for intelligent and educated people
how does George feel about MR. C? he liked him. 1) as a little boy, he would give him money for lemon ice. 2) he was different than the other neighbours, he was smart
what do you know about Mr. C's family life? he is married. one might argue if it's a happy marriage. we know nothing about children.
why did Mr. C ask George what he was doing that summer? he saw him wandering aimlessly at night and was concerned about his well being.
why did George hesitate before answering Mr. C? because he needed a few seconds to make up a lie
what did George answer ? that he was reading 100 books to pick up on his education
why did he lie? he wanted Mr. C's respect
why did Mr. C say he wants to talk some books with George? (to shoot the breeze) he wanted to have an intelligent talk with someone, expand his mind
what did Mr. C do after George told him that he was reading 100 books? he spread this rumor in the neighbourhood
how did George's family react to the rumor? George's father said nothing, but smiled kindly Sophie supported him by giving him a weekly allowance from her hard earned money as a waitress.
how did the spread rumor make George feel? uplifted, happy, proud and respected
George had an urge to really begin reading 100 books. what did he do with that urge? nothing. he went back to being a bumb.
how did Mr. C escape his reality? booze. he was a drunk
what was Mr. C escape from? he was middle aged and unsuccessful in all aspects of his life. he had good academic potential, but being uneducated, he worked in a dead end job, with little pay, was poor and unhappy with his marriage.
