Music vocab

fine arts (music) final vocab

TermDefinition
Music a human creative endeavor that involves the organization of sound in time
Melody a single line of notes heard in secession as a coherent unit (the thing that captures your ears'/brain's attention)
Pitch The "highness" or "lowness" of sound
Phrase A brief musical statement
Harmony The sound created by multiple voices playing or singing together (the things that support the melody)
Rhythm the ordering of music in time (the instruments used the order the music in time)
Meter An underlying pattern of beats that maintains itself consistently (our ears tend to sort these into groups of 2s or 3s)
Tempo The speed at which a piece of music is preformed
Texture The general relationship of musical lines or voices to one another (monophony, homophony, polyphony)
Timber The character or quality of a sound
Word Painting expressing the literal meaning of song lyrics using musical techniques
Program Music A piece of instrumental music that tries to express something extramusical, like a poem or a story
Leitmotif A musical phrase that is associated with a person, place, or idea
Sacred Harp a type of vocal music that is associated with colonial America
Ragtime A musical style that came from black musicians in New Orleans, which later evolved into Blues, Jazz, and popular music styles
Avant Garde A music that is experimental and tries to break boundaries
