Cutting down forests for living space farmland and timber products Causes of deforestation
Extremely dry area that covers most of Northern Africa Sahara Desert
Wet area in the desert fed by underground springs Oasis
Transition zone between the Sahara and the Savanna in Africa Sahel (steppe region)
Large grasslands with scattered trees in Africa Savanna
Thick forests with 70 foot high trees in humid tropical areas of Africa Tropical Rainforest
Farming just enough to feed you and your family Subsistence farming
People have to keep cutting down more forest for farmland because they poor soil only supports farms for a few years before it loses its fertility. Soil washing away also contributes to low fertility. How does poor soil contribute to deforestation?
People have to move when the soil can't support life anymore. This causes more desertification when they repeat their activities and overcrowding in cities. Famines can also occur. How does desertification impact Africa?
Widespread shortages of food Famine
Long period of abnormally low rainfall Drought
Warm and humid Tropical
having a lot of moisture in the air Humid
hot and dry air Arid
Warm and dry with slightly more rain Semi-Arid
Continually moving to allow your animals to have enough to eat in arid and semi-arid regions of the world Nomadic Herding
South of the Sahara desert Sub-Sahara
Supplying water to crops using a fresh source of water Irrigation
Land that can be farmed easily Arable land
Dirt with the correct conditions to grow crops easily Fertile soil
Pollution caused by fertilizers and pesticides are washed into the water supply Agricultural runoff
a long period of time during which there is very little or no rain Drought
pollution caused by chemicals and other waste from factories Industrial waste
Lack of fresh water can create conflict as nations compete for fresh water resources Water wars
done by cutting down and burning trees and plants in order to clear an area of land and grow crops on it for usually a brief time Slash and burn agriculture
the gradual destruction of something by natural forces (such as water, wind, or ice) Erosion
Poor agricultural pracice that allows animals to excessively eat grass or other plants that are growing which causes damage to grassland Over grazing
Lack of water due to not having the money to keep the water clean Economic water scarcity
Lack of water because there is little to no fresh water available Physical water scarcity
Viruses, bacteria, parasites, and animal waste that pollute the water Natrual pollution
