Waves and Sound Wave
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Wave | a disturbance caused by energy moving from one location to another through a medium/substance |
Energy | the strength of a wave, which can increase how far it disturbs the particles it moves through |
Medium | the matter a wave is moving through. Can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas. |
Mechanical Wave | a wave that requires a medium to move through |
Transverse Wave | a wave that vibrates particles perpendicular to the direction the wave travels |
Crest | The maximum/highest point of a wave |
Trough | The minimum/lowest point of a wave |
Amplitude | the “height of a wave” measured from its center to a crest or trough |
Wavelength | the “length of a wave” measured from crest to crest, or from trough to trough |
Frequency | The number of waves that pass a fixed point within a second OR how squished together a wave is. The shorter the wavelength the greater the frequency. |
Compression Wave | a wave that vibrates particles in the same direction the wave travels |
Compression | The part of a compressional wave where the particles are most pushed together |
Rarefaction | The part of a compressional wave where the particles are most spread apart |
Pitch | how high or low a note sounds |
Loudness | the strength of a sound |
Reflection | When a wave strikes another object and bounces off. When the wave is a sound wave it produces an echo. |
Absorption | When a wave strikes another object and is absorbed by the object rather than bouncing off. |
Diffraction | The bending of waves around a barrier. The wave will move through an opening and expand out beyond it. |
Refraction | the bending of a wave as it moves from one medium into another. |
