Medical Terms in Veterinary Terminology

TermDefinition
Acute Short course, sudden onset; usually means severe.
Alopecia Hair loss resulting in hairless patches or complete lack of hair.
Anaphylaxis A severe response to a foreign substance; signs develop acutely and may include swelling, blockage of airways, etc.
Anatomy The study of body structure and form of living things.
Ascites An abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
Aspirate The act of inhaling; removing fluid or gas through suction.
Ataxia The inability to voluntarily control muscle movement, 'stumbling'.
Auscultation Listening to body sounds; usually involves a stethoscope.
Blepharospasm Rapid, involuntary contractions of the eyelids.
Borborygmus Gastrointestinal gas movement causing rumbling; gut sounds.
Cell The ultimate functional unit of an organic structure, plant, or animal.
Chronic Long course, progressive onset; persisting for a long time.
Coprophagy Ingestion of feces.
Crepitus The grating of fractured bone fragments against each other; can be heard and felt.
Debridement The removal of foreign material and devitalized or contaminated tissue.
Dental Calculus The abnormal mineralized deposit that forms on teeth, also called tartar.
Drench To give meds in liquid form by mouth, forcing the animal to drink.
Enema The introduction of fluid into the rectum.
Epistaxis Nosebleed.
Erythema Skin redness.
Euthanasia Inducing death of an animal quickly and painlessly.
Excoriations Scratches or abrasions on the skin.
Extracellular Outside of the cell.
Febrile Having a fever.
Halitosis Offensive odour of breath; bad breath.
Hernia A protrusion of a body part through a tissue that normally contains it.
Homeostasis Maintaining a constant internal environment.
Idiopathic Of an unknown cause; disease peculiar to an individual, not likely seen in others.
Incontinent Inability to control excretory function.
Intercellular (Interstitial) Between cells.
Intracellular Within a cell.
Lethargic A condition of drowsiness, listlessness or indifference.
Meconium First stools of a newborn; consists of the material collected in the intestine of the fetus.
Metastasis Pathogenic growth distant from the primary disease site; beyond control.
Nictitating Membrane Third eyelid.
Nosocomial Infection A disorder caused while in a facility or clinic; acquired during hospitalization.
Nystagmus Involuntary, constant, rhythmic movements of the eye.
Organ A part of the body that performs a special function or functions; a group of tissues.
Palpate To test or examine by feeling.
Physiology The study of body functions.
Pica Eating or licking abnormal substances; depraved appetite.
Polydactyl More than normal number of digits.
Polyphagia Increased eating or swallowing.
Porphyrin Reddish staining around the eyes (rodents).
Prognosis A prediction of the outcome of a disease.
Proprioception Spatial orientation; sense of body position & movement.
Pruritus Itchiness.
Pyrexia Fever.
Quarantine A regulation under police power for the exclusion or isolation of an animal to control the spread of disease.
Signalment The description of an animal in regard to species, breed, age, sexual status (intact vs neutered).
Slough Necrotic tissue that separates from the healthy tissue and falls off.
System Composed of a group of organs that carry out specific functions (ie. digestive system).
Tenesmus Painful, ineffective defecation.
Tissue Groups of specialized cells that are similar in structure and function.
Urticaria Localized area of swelling that itches, also called hives.
