Protagonist | the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, or other fictional text |
Antagonist | a person who actively opposes or is hostile to the protagonist in a story |
Biography | an account of someone’s life written by someone else |
Autobiography | an account of a person’s life written by that person |
Setting | the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place |
Conflict | a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one |
Climax | the highest point of tension or drama in a story’s plot |
Resolution | the conclusion of a story’s plot |
Exposition | the beginning of the story in which the setting, characters, and other basic information is introduced |
Plot | the sequence of events that make up a story |
Theme | the universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature |
Point of View | the vantage point from which a story is presented |
Dramatic Irony | a literary device by which the audience’s or reader’s understanding of events or individuals in a work surpasses that of its characters |
Situational Irony | the irony of something happening that is very different to what was expected |
Verbal Irony | the type of irony where a person says one thing and means something else |
Imagery | the use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appears to the audience’s physical senses |
Pun | a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings |
Personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form |
Alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words |
Onomatopoeia | the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named |
Assonance | the repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds within words, phrases, or sentences |
Persuasive Writing | a writing mode used to convince or persuade a reader that the writer's opinion of a topic or cause is correct |
Expositive Writing | a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner |
Descriptive Writing | writing in which the author's intent is to create a vivid image of what he/she is describing in the mind of the reader |
