Term | Definition |

Ordinance | Legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
Board of Supervisors | Legislative Body that establishes county government policy, passes resolutions, and ordinances. Often hires an County Administrator. |
Town Manager | Executive position that oversees the town administration offices and government operations. |
School Board | Legislative Board that represents the community's voice in public education. Often elected, sometimes appointed by the Board of Supervisors. Usually hires the School Superintendent. |
Town Council | Legislative Board of local government for small municipalities. Oversees local government policy, passes resolutions, and ordinances. Often hires the Town Manager. |
Mayor | Highest-ranking elected executive official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. |
Enacting Ordinances | When a government or authority enacts a proposal, they make it into a law. |
Land Use | Planning and regulation restricts how land can be used. |
Judicial Disputes | When one person files suit against another where litigation is facilitated by the government within federal, state, and municipal courts. |
Sheriff | The highest, usually elected, law-enforcement officer of a county. |
Clerk of the Court | Maintains all records of criminal​ cases, including all pleas and motions made both before and after an actual trial. |
Commissioner of Revenue | The chief tax-assessing official of the locality. |
Treasurer | Primarily responsible for managing the revenue and cash flow, banking, investment, or disbursement of municipal funds. |
Charters | A unique set of laws that forms the legal foundation of its local system of government. |
Implementation | The delivery of a program or service in a specific community setting. |
Money provided by the state | State and Federal Funds that pass through the State allocated to local governments to provide specific programs or services in the community. |
Services for residents | Services provided by the town, county, or city. |
Collaboration | Cooperative action between local, state, and federal governments. |
Compromise | Agreements reached when each side makes concessions. |
Independent | Not subject to another's authority or jurisdiction. |
Incorporated Towns | Having received a charter from the State or Commonwealth. |
Preferences | A greater liking for one alternative over another. |
