Rhyme Scheme | The pattern of rhymes in a poem. EXAMPLE: aabbcc OR ababcdcd |
Meter | The patterned number of beats or rhythm in a poem. EXAMPLE: iambic pentameter |
Graphic Elements | What gives form to a poem on the page, the shape of a poem, and/or punctuation used for emphasis in a poem. EXAMPLE: shaped poems, line length |
Metaphor | Comparing two unlike things. EXAMPLE: The player was a monster on the court. |
Personification | Giving humanlike qualities to animals or objects. EXAMPLE: The wind whispered in my ear. |
Mood | The overall feeling, or atmosphere, of a text often created by the author's use of imagery and word choice. EXAMPLE: a poem makes the reader feel romantic. |
Voice | Particular elements used by the speaker that are unique to their writing style. EXAMPLE: a humorous poet will use humorous phrases. |
Tone | The attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience conveyed through word choice and the style of the writing. EXAMPLE: a poet's voice sounds angry. |
