Truman Doctrine | The United States’ policy geared to containing communism to those countries already under Soviet control. |
Containment | The basic U.S. foreign policy toward the USSR during the early and intermediate Cold War expressed by the Truman Doctrine. |
Marshall Plan | United States plan to provide economic aid to western Europe to help it rebuild after WWII. |
Korean War | 1950 invasion of South Korea by North Korea (backed by the USSR and China) turned into a United Nations backed United States counter attack and prolonged war. A great example of the developing policy of containment. |
Berlin Airlift | The airborne relief of West Berlin initiated by G.B. and the U.S after Stalin closed access to the city in order to force allied concessions in Germany. The West kept West Berlin functioning for almost a year before Stalin reopened the border. |
Superpower | A term used during the Cold War to label the huge global economic and military power of the world’s two most powerful countries: the USSR and the United States. |
Berlin Wall | literal wall built in 1961 between the Soviet sector of Berlin (East Berlin) and the allied sector of Berlin (West Berlin). The predominant reason behind the wall was to stop the embarrassing tide of people leaving Soviet control to enter Allied control. |
